How to Apply
For international students
Send us an updated CV, your transcripts, and a brief letter of motivation in which you explain why you want to work at NEST Lab. To work at NEST Lab, you need to go through the WPI Admissions process (undergraduate, graduate). In your motivation letter, make sure you mention that you want to work at NEST Lab and motivate why.
For WPI students
Send us an updated CV and your most recent unofficial transcripts. We'll set up a meeting to talk in person.
WPI Major Qualifying Projects
Timeline
MQPs at NEST Lab are typically done between A Term and C Term. Students who are doing a double major may work also in D Term to finalize the project. We won't consider MQPs distributed across less than 3 terms.
Organization
The typical organization of an MQP at NEST Lab is as follows.
A Term
Objectives:
- Produce a document that specifies the problem statement and the objectives of the MQP.
- The objectives must be *measurable*
- At the end of the project, you will be evaluated according to these objectives!
- *You* set the objectives, after discussing with the advisors
- (optional) Describe the preliminary design of your solution.
Evaluation:
- General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
- Completeness of the citations to existing work
B Term
Objectives:
- Complete the initial design
- Implement the initial design
- Identify the shortcoming of the design
- Integrate your findings in the document produced in A-Term
Evaluation:
- Depth of the design - did you try the first thing you thought?
- Independence - did you propose your solution?
- General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
- Completeness of the citations to existing work
C and D Term
Objectives:
- Finalize the design
- Implement the final design
- Validate the final design
- Identify the shortcoming of the final design
- Integrate your findings in the document produced in B-Term
Evaluation:
- Thoroughness of the validation - did you test your design in realistic conditions?
- Adherence to the objectives formalized in A Term
- General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
- Depth of “lessons learned” section - what did you learn from this project? how can it be improved by a future MQP team?
